Naturalist
DESCRIPTION
Naturalists work as part of a team of enthusiastic, energetic staff members. Classes range from 1-3 hours and are taken from our wide curriculum that includes natural science, team building, living history, archery, wildlife adaptations and teambuilding. Staff will teach to groups of 12-20 elementary and middle school aged students. Other components of the job include: hosting meals, curriculum development, nature center feeding/cleaning, organizing evening programs, completing camp projects, and participating in staff training. Naturalists take part in our professional development series through the season.
Responsibilities of all camp staff include:
- Interact with all campers, teachers, parents, staff, and chaperones in a positive manner.
- Supervise and promote safety regulations while encompassing the values of the YMCA.
- Maintain the GMV YMCA Culture of excellent camp experience, accountability and positive attitude.
Lead Naturalist responsibilities include:
- Teach the Outdoor Education Curriculum to elementary and middle school aged children.
- Lead evening activities such as campfire and act in living history programs.
- Facilitate our challenge course and climbing elements with school-age through adult groups.
- Maintain program areas to be safe, clean and exciting.
- Assist with camp projects.
- Update, improve and create curriculum.
- Participate in professional development program which includes in-services and field trips.
- Complete weekly duties such as care of nature center animals, hosting meals, greeting the groups and other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
- Experience working with children strongly desired
- Public speaking skills and confidence in front of groups
- Comfortable in rustic, outdoor setting in all weather conditions
- Creativity, a strong work ethic and initiative
- Bachelor's Degree strongly desired (or working towards), high school diploma or equivalent required
- Work 5 days a week, some weekend work
Compensation:
- On-site housing, laundry facilities, Wi-Fi, private individual rooms

- Pay equation:
Starting at $265 -$5 for every season returning (caped at 4 OE seasons at $20) -$15 for lead facilitator certification for high ropes -$10 for YMCA Lifeguard/CPR/First Aid/O2 -$5 for Nationally Recognized certifications (such as archery, cpr/first aid, and other certifications that Director Team sees as applicable to your responsibilities) -$30 for completed master’s degree or $20 for completed bachelor’s degree or $10 for completed associates degree
Seasons:
Spring: Late Feb - Late May/Early June Fall: Late August/Early September – Late November *From June to August we have opportunities with our summer camp program
